"Toppnyheter" wins Best Use of AI in the Newsroom

The AI project within NTM AB, where we at Online Voices have produced the AI cloned voice, won the Best Use of AI in the Newsroom award by WAN-IFRA! And in addition, further nominations. Hooray!!!

The WAN-IFRA Digital Media Awards Europe competition annually recognizes projects that excel in journalism, digital innovation and the use of AI.

This year, the jury was attracted by NTM’s work on Top News and the nomination read:

“This is a great example of rapid prototyping powered by GenAI and shows how a seemingly simple idea, with solid planning, can help create reusable content that gives users the choice of their preferred format.”

Subscribers can listen to the top news of the day

The “Toppnyheter” project provides readers with the most important news of the day in audio format. Using advanced AI technology, news is summarized and presented regularly throughout the day, making journalism more accessible and tailored to readers’ needs. The service was launched last fall on unt.se.

The new service has been developed in close collaboration between several different departments within NTM: the development department has built the technical feeds to select the top news stories and developed the new audio player, and the audio production company Online Voices has created a special AI voice for the broadcasts.

– This project really shows the strength of our internal collaboration. By working closely together across departments, we have been able to take an idea from sketch to first working version with high quality in a short time. It is a testament to what we can achieve when we work cross-functionally, side by side,” says Nicholas Gullberg, Head of Development at NTM.

The European winners will go forward to the international competition to be held in May in Krakow during the annual WAN-IFRA World Conference. Top news stories are also nominated in the INMA Global Awards to be held at the end of May.

– “It was great to be part of this project, where our expertise in voices was used in a new way.” says Kalle Widelius, CEO of Online Voices. “For us, it is very important that the customer gets a good service, but also that the voice feels completely safe with how their AI voice clone will be used, or above all how it will not be used. That is why we have developed clear agreements for both the customer and the voice that were used in this project, among others.
